Analyse a match video: track, measure, freeze and draw

Short answer

How do I analyse a match video in the Studio?

With Match Video: add a clip under Match footage and mark the pitch on one wide frame, and the Studio follows the camera through the whole clip. On a wide screen it opens in the Match Analysis room: track every player, put them on your board, add the analysis and measure players along the timeline, and freeze where you want to explain.

Step by step

  1. Add a clip and mark the pitch

Open Match footage under The board, choose Video and press Add a video. Drop a clip; a longer one is cut to the minute you pick, and it is made ready on your device before it saves privately to your account. Then find a wide frame with plenty of lines in it and mark the pitch on it, as on a match picture. From a real match, on your systems page, starts a new board from a clip when Video is chosen.

The camera is then followed through the clip, on your device. Play it in the sheet: the pitch is drawn over it in gold, and the timeline shows where the painted lines held it. A replay or a close-up cuts the follow: mark a frame after the cut to follow that part too.

  2. Play it in the Match Analysis room

On a wide screen a board with a clip opens in the Match Analysis room: the stage in the middle, the tools on a rail at the left, what a tool or a pick does on the right, and the whole clip on a timeline underneath. Space plays it, the arrows step a frame, and F freezes it at the playhead for 3 s, then it plays on. Tactics board, on the top bar, opens the same board among the tactics drawers, as on a phone or a tablet.

Among the tactics drawers, press Freeze here at each moment you want to explain, then Make the phases. The clip plays to each freeze, stops on that frame for your players and drawings, and plays on. On a phase that plays, the bar under the board scrubs through it and Freeze here cuts it there.

  3. Track everyone on the pitch

Once the camera is followed, Track everyone on the pitch, in the same panel, gives every player, keeper and official a ring through the whole clip, each side read from the shirts, and keeps the tracks with the clip in your storage. Pick a man in the list and his ring turns gold: give him the right kit, make him a keeper, an official or not a player, swap him with the man beside him from that moment on, or make him the same man as one who was lost and came back.

  4. Put them on the board

On a frozen frame, Put them on the board, under Everyone on the pitch, stands every man the tracks see on the counter of his side nearest him, so numbers and names stay. Pick which kit is yours under Our side, and In their shirts dresses the board in the clip's kits. Men out of shot keep their place from the phase before, a side short of eleven is filled from a 4-4-2 laid round its men, and every guess is drawn faded with a dashed edge until you move him.

From then on each man runs his track through every phase of the clip, so the board moves like the match: in Both views, a share link, Team Talk and a saved video, and the PDF prints each playing phase at its end with the real runs as trails. A man lost from view waits where he was last seen, then runs to where he is seen next. Fix a man in the list and his counter follows the fix; drag one while he is in view and he is followed again from there, as your own.

  5. Add the analysis on the timeline

In the room, Analysis adds a figure at the playhead: a side's back line, shape, thirds or lanes, each man's space or a side's heat. On a freeze it holds on that frame; while the clip plays it stays on for 4 s. Each figure is a bar on the timeline: drag it to move it, drag an end to set when it comes on or goes, or press it to set its start and end to the playhead ([ and ]) or take it off (Delete).

On a phase of the clip, Analysis, in the same panel, draws what the camera shows, worked out from the players on the board at every moment: a side's back line at its second-last man and how far it stands from its goal (the keeper counts as behind it unless the camera sees him), a side's width, depth and area, how many of each side stand in each third or lane, the grass in view each man is nearest to, and where a side or one player was seen through the whole clip.

  6. Measure the players

Measure, on the room's rail, works from the players you click on the stage: Distance between two, Area for the m² inside three or more, Line through players in order with each gap in metres, Run for how far a man runs from the playhead, Speed, and Heat for where one man stood through the clip. Area and Line take as many players as you click: press Add or Enter. Only players on the board who run the clip are measured.

Pick a player for his speed and the distance to the men near him. Only the men the camera sees are counted, never a guess, so put them on the board from the tracks first. The figures show on the video and on the board alike, in a share link, Team Talk, the PDF and a saved video.

  7. Add the ball, touch by touch

The ball, under Analysis, comes from your touches. At the moment you want, press Add a touch and tap the man who plays it or takes it, or the grass for a shot or a ball out. Between two touches by one man he carries it at his feet; otherwise it travels, along the grass or in the air with the top you set, since one camera cannot measure height. Once the clip is tracked, the touches tracking saw at a man's feet are offered to add.

Over the video each pass is drawn as a line behind the real ball, reaching the receiver as the ball does, and an arc for one in the air. On the board the ball itself runs the touches, in Both views, a share link, Team Talk and a saved video, and the PDF prints its path as a trail. The back line's offside line steps up to the ball when it is nearer the goal than the second-last man. To show a pass of your own over a freeze, Move it yourself here makes that phase's ball yours.

What Match Video does

Plays a clip from a real match on the board, stops it where you want to explain, and plays on. Mark the pitch on one frame and the camera is followed through the whole clip, so everything you draw stays on the grass while it plays. On a frozen frame you move your players and draw as on any phase, and their rings can follow the real players while it plays. The clip is kept privately in your account: a share link and a Team Talk play it under your drawings, and the PDF shows those phases on your board.

The clip and your board, together

Both views, beside the zoom, puts the clip and your board together, side by side or one over the other. Draw on either and it shows on both. While the clip plays, the followed players run on the board too, and the gold outline on the board is what the camera sees at that moment.

Save as a video can film it that way too: turn on Both views there, and the clip and your board play together, side by side in landscape and the clip over the board in vertical.

Vision, the beam, the magnifier and the stopwatch

Pick a player and switch on Vision for a cone on the grass from him toward where he is looking, on any board, flat, tilted or over footage, and drag the dot at its end to aim it. On a move it turns with him. On a phase over a picture or a clip, Spotlight beam drops a beam of light onto him, and Magnifier puts a lens over him that magnifies the real player 1.5, 2 or 3 times. All three are in Play and in every saved video and picture.

Stopwatch, under The ball, puts a running clock over the footage, top left: Start at sets the moment it starts from, Stop at the moment it holds at. It shows in Play and in a saved video or picture of the clip.

Your own pitch

Club pitches are not all 105 by 68. In the step where you mark the pitch, set its length and width; when your points include a corner, a touchline or the halfway line, the studio measures the pitch from them and offers the size to use. The camera is followed on that pitch's own lines, and the board keeps its shape with your ground's box, circle and spots drawn where they fall, so every distance, speed, area and measured line reads in your pitch's real metres. Changing the size follows the clip again; men you followed and your touches move with the new camera, and the tracks are cleared to be made again.

Among the tactics drawers

Before the phases are made, step 5, Extras, sets up the panel's tools on the clip: Track everyone on the pitch runs right there, Put them on the board at each freeze stands every man in shot on the board, and you can take the ball touches tracking saw, pick what every phase's analysis shows, set the stopwatch and switch off drawings behind the players. Skip makes the phases without them. On the board each tool is a card in the Video panel that opens and folds: press ? on a card for what it does and how to use it.

On a frozen frame, Find the players puts your counters on the real players. Follow them through the clip then gives each a ring that runs with his player while the clip plays, before and after the freeze. If a ring slips onto someone else, drag it back at that moment and he is followed again from there.

Your clips and your storage

A file longer than a minute is cut to the minute you pick. Once its phases are made, Another moment from this file opens the same file on that step again: each moment becomes a clip of its own, with its phases after the ones before. The file itself stays on your device and is never uploaded; it is forgotten when the page reloads.

Clips count against your plan's storage, a total for all your files and never a monthly amount, shown in the sheet and in Settings, under Storage, where a storage pack makes it bigger. Your clips, in the sheet's foot, lists them; deleting one frees its room, and every board that played it shows those phases on its own pitch.

Questions

What match footage works with Match Video?

A clip from a broadcast or a club camera, in MP4, MOV or WebM. Up to a minute is kept, at up to 1080p, so a longer clip is cut to the minute you pick. The main wide camera works best: a replay or a close-up cuts the follow, and a frame marked after the cut follows that part too. Pitches can be any size from 90 to 120 metres long and 45 to 90 wide: set yours, or let the points you mark measure it.

Does the Studio track the players in a match video?

Yes. On Amateur and Pro, pick players on a frame and each gets a ring that follows him through the clip. On Pro, once the camera is followed, Track everyone on the pitch gives every player, keeper and official a ring through the whole clip, on your device and with no credits, and reads each side from the shirts. Pick any man in the list to put him right: his kit, a keeper, an official or not a player, or swap him with the man beside him from that moment on. Put them on the board then makes each tracked man one of your counters, running his real path through every phase.

What can Match Video measure?

On Pro, from the players on your board at every moment of the clip: a side's back line and how far it stands from its goal, its width, depth and area, how many of each side stand in each third or lane, the grass each man is nearest to, where a side or one player was seen through the whole clip, and a player's speed and his distance to the men near him. With Measure, click players on the clip for the distance between two, the area inside three or more in m², each gap along a line through them, or how far one runs. Each figure sits on the clip's timeline from the moment you pick, held on a freeze or on for as long as you drag its bar. Only the men the camera sees are counted, never a guess, and every figure is in your pitch's real metres.

Who can see my match clips?

You, and the people you send it to. A clip is made ready on your own device and saved privately to your account, where it counts against your plan's storage, a total for all your files. A share link or a Team Talk of a board with a clip plays it under your drawings for whoever opens it, while your plan has Match Video and the clip is kept. Turn Show the match video off when you share and the link plays the board alone; delete the clip and every link shows the board. The PDF shows those phases on your board, with every tracked player running his real path.
